True Story, by Julio Cortázar

"A man drops his glasses by accident, and there is a horrible noise when they crash on the floor tiles. He crouches afflicted because the glasses lens are very expensive, yet he discovers amazed that they didn´t broke, by miracle.

Now this man feels deeply thankful, and understands that what just happened can be seen as a friendly warning, so he routes straight to an optical store and gets a cushioned leather case for the glasses right away, to err on the safe. An hour later he drops the glasses again, and when he bends with no major worries he discovers that the glasses broke into pieces. It took some time for this sir to grasp that the Providence plans are inscrutable, and that the miracle has really occurred now."
